Olive Oil and Beauty

A well-groomed, tastefully dressed woman never fails to attract attention, and sometimes a magic touch will result in loveliness complete.

Artificial aids to beauty are not new by any means. The adoration of beauty began before the human race dwelt in tents and few tombs are so primitive that a paint jar or tiny mirror cannot be found in them. The word cosmetic ever has been a magic one to feminine ears the centuries tell us. The Greek beauties kept no less than forty cosmetics for skin, teeth and hair upon their toilet tables which they used in fearful and wonderful ways. And while the cosmetic aids employed by woman today may be but a survival of barbarous custom yet in nineteen centuries femininity has attained something of common sense and realizes that the cream, powder and touch of rouge with which she completes her toilet are but the adornments of beauty, not its principal factor.

Olive oil is as invaluable as an aid to good looks as it is in your kitchen or on your dining table. It pleases the palate as it arrives via the salad or "shortening" route. But give it a one-way ticket from the kitchen to the boudoir and see what it will do.

After a day of business, shopping or pleasure cleanse the face with warm water and soap or cleansing cream. Warm a small portion of pure Olive Oil and with the tips of the fingers, using an outward and upward movement, massage the oil well into the skin of the face and neck, using all that the skin will absorb. Leave it on for a few minutes in order that the hungry cells may feed upon it. Remove superfluous oil with absorbent cotton and you will be surprised at the fresh, live appearance of the skin.

If your face and neck are too thin or seem undernourished, give an olive oil treatment once a week before retiring, leaving the oil on all night to be absorbed by the skin.

Olive oil feeds the skin well, but if your skin is inclined to yellow and you are afraid to use the oil too frequently, combine three ounces of olive oil with one-half ounce of almond oil and one half ounce of benzoin. If the olive oil has a tendency to yellow the skin it will be neutralized by the benzoin which is a whitener. It also is an astringent, which is beneficial to those whose skins have become flabby.

A small amount of oil applied to the face before powdering is considered by many more satisfactory than cold cream as it not only forms a foundation for powder but nourishes the skin and keeps it from becoming dry and hard from exposure.

If your hands are thin, dry and inclined to wrinkle, treat them to an oil bath. Soak them well in the oil, massaging it well into the hands. It will feed the tissues and help to make the hands plumper and improve their appearance a hundred per cent. If the nails are brittle, break easily, rub them with olive oil after bathing the hands and this condition will speedily be corrected.

The cells of the hair, too, take kindly to this remedial oil. If your scalp is dry, the hair dull and lusterless, apply warm oil directly to the scalp, rubbing it well in. Do this at night before retiring. Cover the head with a towel so that the oil will be absorbed while you sleep. Shampoo the following morning. This treatment gives the hair new life and luster besides nourishing the scalp and promoting growth.

If the body is too thin, massage after a warm bath when the pores are open and receptive, with warm olive oil. To remove the odor and any semblance of oiliness use talcum powder freely. A tablespoon of the oil before each meal will help along the building up process as this beautifier works as well internally as externally. And a teaspoonful of grape juice with the same quantity of olice oil is a splendid remedy for a dry, mottled skin.
