Uses of Olive Oil
Olive oil is not only
beneficial when consumed as part of a healthy diet, it can also be used
in a variety of other applications including health treatments and around
the home-in fact, there is no end to olive oil's usefulness!
Olive oil's main use, however, is in the culinary field. It is used as
cooking oil all over the world. Extra virgin olive oil is used in salad
dressings, or simply added to foods to be eaten cold. Some varieties of
olive oil are suitable for frying purposes, but with others heat deteriorates
the flavor.
Olive oil is very popular in skin care regimes as it is excellent
for moisturizing the skin and relieving dry, chapped lips, plus it helps
to strengthen nails. It can also be used as shaving oil for facial and
other body hair, and dipping a shaving blade in olive oil can prevent
rust forming. Many people use olive oil as a deep conditioning treatment
for hair, plus it can help detangle knotted tresses very effectively.
It can also be used as massage oil.
In the home, olive oil can be rubbed into cutting boards to repel stains
and prevent cracking. It can be used as a stainless steel cleaner if applied
sparingly. If rubbed into polished brass or copper, it helps to prevent
the recurrence of tarnish. Olive oil is great for restoring the shine
on shoe leather, or lubricating old leather. It can help with jammed zippers
and you can also use it to remove paint from the skin or hair. It is useful
for lubricating garden tool blades and can be added to lemon juice to
make a natural furniture polish.
Because it causes very few allergic reactions, olive oil also has some
great medicinal properties. It can be utilized as an ingredient in drug
preparations and it is often used for its mild laxative properties.
Olive oil has also longed been used by various religious
denominations, as it is considered to have special religious symbolism
for healing, strength and consecration. In Judaism, olive oil is used
as fuel in the Menorah. In the Catholic and Orthodox faith, olive oil
is used for the Oil of the Catechumens. Olive oil is also still used in
lamps by eastern Orthodox Christians. In Islam, the Prophet Muhammad reportedly
recommended olive oil, and the olive plant was mentioned as a blessed
tree in the Qur'an.
